Catching up. . .

Posted by jbalaco on June 23, 2008

Not really. . . too much time has passed since last posting to actually catch up on everything. Will try to hit the highlights. Will probably continue to post spotty since cannot seem to connect to Internet from home - argh!

Internship: Finally started the weekly internship lunches. Very interesting to hear about other departments in publishing (so far heard from someone from textbook publishing and audio book production). Have continued with much the same work - mailings, mailings, mailings. Have written more, including a letter (that was not heavily edited) that went out to music associations across the country - VERY EXCITING! Also, just finished a press release for one of the best books that we have coming out this fall in my opinion - No Choirboy by Susan Kuklin. I am waiting to see how much editing it undergoes.

NYC: My aunts came to visit last weekend. We hit all of the tourist attractions we could in just a few days. They were great sports about getting caught in the rain several times resulting in us being drenched since we did not have umbrellas. Saw Phantom of the Opera, tried to see Vampire Weekend (although left b/c of the rain), went to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. They also got to go up in the Empire State Building, but I had to go to work. Even got a bonus vacation day when their flight was canceled due to weather in Detroit?! We ate many a delicious meals and I don’t know about them but I had a great time.

This past weekend, I fell in love with the city all over again. Friday went to
a Staten Island Yankees game with co-worker and her friends. Took the ferry which was v. reminiscent of parking structure visits in Ann Arbor. 16 oz. Bud Lights for only $3.50 and the boat ride is free! The stadium is a quick walk and the tickets are cheap to the game (as are the beers - at least compared to major league baseball and many bars). And even though they lost, there were fireworks after the game - quite impressive ones at that! Of course, it seems that a night is no longer complete without the requisite downpour which happened upon return to Manhattan.

Saturday, I started my day in the normal manner - Union Square Greenmarket for the weeks groceries, where I end each trip at the pretzel stand to make eyes at the cute boy who works there. Back home with said groceries and then off to the World Financial Plaza to pick-up concert tickets. I also decided to stay for the Grand Final Colors of the Rainbow Team Match having no idea what it was. Since it didn’t start right away, I took a walk along the Hudson and sat and read for a while (the weather was BEAUTIFUL!). The competition was amazing - elementary students from New York City dance the merengue, rumba, tango, the foxtrot and swing. WOW they can dance. This is the same school program (Dancing Classrooms) that the documentary Mad Hot Ballroom chronicled. After, I made my way back up along the Hudson and enjoyed the view.

Next up for me is my trip to the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim. I leave Thursday. I’m not sure what to expect but the hotel has a pool (for Thursday and Friday before the conference if I can’t get around easily) and then I am going to library like no other. As if I don’t get enough free books, I will also load up on all the great upcoming titles. I have a list started so it should be interesting.

Well, that’s quite a lot. Hopefully, I’ll be better about updating (like in the beginning) but at least partially dependent on Internet connection. I will update from California for sure if not sooner. Tonight if weather holds off will be enjoying Bride of Frankenstein under the “stars” in Bryant Park. Back again soon.
